45 Pro-Palestinian Protesters Arrested At Yale University As Rallies Spread To More Campuses

Yale University police detained at least more than 45 demonstrators who allegedly defied orders to vacate the site of a pro-Palestinian, pro-divestment protest, as reported by Connecticut police.

The demonstration mirrored a series of pro-Palestinian protests taking place at various college campuses.

According to CNN, tensions have been on the rise at several US universities following the October 7 terror attack on Israel by Hamas, resulting in approximately 1,200 casualties, and Israel's subsequent conflict with Hamas in Gaza, which has led to the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, according to the enclave's health ministry.

At Yale, "Around 45 individuals declined to leave and were charged by Yale officers with Criminal Trespass in the 1st Degree, a misdemeanor," stated New Haven police. "They were taken to a Yale Police facility for processing and then released."

After the initial arrests, "a group of roughly 200 protesters came back" to obstruct an intersection, New Haven police reported late Monday morning.

By 5 p.m., protesters were instructed to disperse as authorities were prepared to declare the gathering an unlawful assembly. Organizers of the protest urged the group to scatter, and most returned to campus to continue their demonstration. The road was reopened, and reporters did not observe any further arrests.

Yale University's police department had "issued summonses to 47 students" after repeated requests to vacate Hewitt Quadrangle, where protesters "advocating for Yale's divestment from military weapons manufacturers gathered," the institution announced.

Students who were detained will also face Yale disciplinary measures, which could include reprimand, probation, or suspension," the university stated.

Protesters at Yale had been cautioned twice prior to the arrests - once at 11 p.m. on Sunday and again before 7 a.m. on Monday, as reported by the  university's police chief's comments to the Yale Daily News.
