Defence Minister Badaru Resigns Amid Rising Insecurity Across Nigeria

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has tendered his resignation with immediate effect, a development that has sent shockwaves through political circles and heightened public debate over the country’s escalating security challenges.

According to senior government insiders who confirmed the development on Monday, the minister’s resignation followed increasing pressure on the security sector as violent crimes, bandit attacks, and insurgent activities continue to surge across several regions. Sources within the Ministry of Defence reported that the minister stepped down after a series of internal reviews and high-level security briefings raised questions about the effectiveness of current strategies in addressing the rise in insecurity.

Badaru, a former governor of Jigawa State, was appointed defence minister in 2023 and had pledged to implement wide-ranging reforms within Nigeria’s armed forces. However, according to officials privy to recent discussions, persistent security setbacks across the North West, North Central, and parts of the South East intensified calls for stronger leadership and clearer operational coordination.

Reports by top administrative aides indicate that the minister’s departure was formally communicated to the presidency late Sunday night. Although the presidency has yet to issue an official statement, sources at the State House disclosed that the resignation was accepted immediately "in the interest of national security and administrative stability."

Security analysts say the timing of Badaru’s exit reflects the growing frustration among citizens and stakeholders who have expressed concerns over relentless banditry, kidnapping, and terrorist operations. According to several eyewitness accounts from affected communities, bandit activities have become increasingly coordinated, with incidents of village raids and highway attacks rising sharply in recent months.

Political observers described the resignation as one of the most significant shake-ups within President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet since the administration took office. As reported by military sources, service chiefs are expected to reevaluate ongoing operations and propose urgent measures to restore public confidence in the nation’s security framework.

With the Defence Ministry now without its chief executive, attention is focused on the presidency as Nigerians await the announcement of a new appointee who will be tasked with steering the nation’s military response at a critical time.
