Do Mermaid Exist?

Mermaid is an aquatic mystical creature with the head and upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish, though many believes the creature is associated with females alone, but some scholars also believed that there are also male marmaid which are refered to as merman. Mermaids appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including Europe, Asia, and Africa and in some part of America.

Despite the believe that male mermaid exist,  they are generally assumed to co-exist with their female counterparts. The male and the female collectively are sometimes referred to as merfolk or merpeople. In most African folktales, Hollywood movies, and other areas that portraits the existence of mermaid, they always makes the mermaid appear to exist only as women. These mystical marine  creatures are portraits as extremely beautiful women which is believe to sometimes have strong love relationship with humans. But the real question is " Do marmaid really exist?"

According to the book Mermaids of Earth, "The first appearance of mermaids in human culture seems to have occurred about 1000 BC in Assyria (roughly equivalent to present-day Syria plus the northern area of Iraq). In the mythology of Assyria the beautiful fertility goddess Atargatis became a mermaid after casting herself into a lake"

Western history made it clear that, the conception of mermaids in the West may have been influenced by the Sirens of Greek mythology, which were originally half-birdlike, but came to be pictured as half-fishlike in the Christian era. Historical accounts of mermaids, such as those reported by Christopher Columbus during his exploration of the Caribbean, may have been sightings of manatees or similar aquatic mammals. While there is no evidence that mermaids exist outside folklore, reports of mermaid sightings continue to the present day.

In Africa, there are many reported cases of Mermaids disturbing construction company during the construtions of bridges, which most times these companies will have to call on spiritual daitys for sacrifices to appeace the mermaid. But funny enough none off these construction companies has ever come up with such reports and the stories can only be taking to be one of those mermaid stories. In African churches, people having been confessing of having spiritual love relationship with mermaid spirits during deliverance session, but since there is no physical evidence of the presence of mermaid in all these stories, the existence of mermaid still remains mystery.

While there is no evidence that mermaids exist outside folklore, reports of mermaid sightings continue to the present day.
