Over a span of three months in 2024, more than 2,500 lives were tragically lost due to gang violence in Haiti.
According to a report by the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), the number of casualties resulting from gang violence in Haiti has significantly increased. From January through March, more than 2,500 people were either killed or injured, marking a 53% rise compared to the last three months of 2023.
The report also highlights that at least 590 individuals lost their lives during police operations.
Shockingly, some of these victims were not even involved in gang violence, while others had limited mobility. Additionally, vigilante justice groups were responsible for the deaths of at least 141 individuals.
The majority of these violent incidents occurred in the capital city of Port-au-Prince.
Furthermore, the wider West Department and agricultural Artibonite region experienced a significant number of kidnappings, with at least 438 people being abducted.
The areas of La Saline and Cite Soleil, situated along the capital's port-side, witnessed the longest and most severe large-scale attacks.
