Prominent Iranian Hip Hop Artist Sentence To Death
Prominent Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi has been sentenced to death in Iran for his involvement in the 2022 protests and his music supporting the demonstrations, according to his lawyer.
The New York Times revealed that the case has received international condemnation due to concerns over human rights abuses and the potential for execution.
Salehi's lawyer stated that he plans to appeal the court's decision.
The U.S. Special Envoy for Iran has also criticized the sentence, highlighting the regime's disregard for human rights and the Iranian people's desire for democratic change.
Salehi was initially arrested in October 2022 for his music criticizing the government and encouraging protests following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.
The charges against him include "spreading corruption on earth," which carries the death penalty. Reports of torture and injuries sustained by Salehi have raised further alarm.
Toomaj Salehi is an Iranian hip hop artist, who gained recognition for his impactful protest songs that shed light on the societal issues in Iran and criticize the policies of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In addition to his music career, Salehi works as a laborer at a metalworking factory. Unfortunately, his involvement in the 2022 Iran protests led to a harsh sentence of six years in prison by the Iranian government.
Tragically, on 24 April 2024, Toomaj Salehi received a death sentence for charges related to his participation in the protests that took place in Iran between 2022 and 2023.
