Gaza War - Mediators Conclude Days of Negotiation Without Reaching Cease-fire Agreement

The truce negotiations between Hamas delegates and Egyptian, Qatari, and U.S. mediators concluded on Saturday without achieving a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The mediators have suggested a 40-day cease-fire period, during which Hamas would release female civilian hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

According to VOA, Hamas is demanding a complete end to the war and the withdrawal of all Israeli forces from Gaza. Israel, on the other hand, has vowed to defeat Hamas and has stated that it will not agree to end the war as part of a hostage release agreement. The possibility of an invasion of Rafah by Israel remains on the negotiating table.

Following the commencement of the talks, a senior Israeli official accused Hamas of obstructing the chances of reaching an agreement by insisting on an end to the war. Israel has not dispatched a delegation to Cairo for the negotiations.

A senior Hamas source, in close proximity to the negotiations, informed Agence France-Presse that the talks are scheduled to resume on Sunday, shortly before 9 p.m. local time (1800 GMT).
