Nigerian Police Officers Allegedly Fired At Female Demonstrators Protesting Against Extortion

On Monday, May 6, 2024, chaos erupted in Delta State as police officers from the Ughelli Area Command reportedly opened fire on women who were peacefully protesting against extortion.

This unfortunate incident resulted in numerous injuries, with the victims being rushed to the hospital for treatment.

According to Sahara Reporters, the trouble began when the women of Oteri-Ughelli community voiced their grievances to the Ughelli area command regarding alleged police extortion and continuous harassment from the Nigerian police.

Despite their peaceful demonstration, the women were met with resistance, aggression, tear gas, and gunfire from the officers stationed at the area command.

Harvest Ugbhwiako and Mrs. Vivian Aphiare, representatives of the protesting women, spoke to the press and revealed that their children and wards had been unlawfully arrested and detained by the police.

This adds to the already distressing situation, further fueling the women's determination to seek justice and put an end to the rampant extortion and mistreatment they have endured.
