Favour Ofili Awarded $5,000 in Compensation for Paris Olympics Omission
The Committee on Resolutions and Recommendations has awarded Nigerian athlete Favour Ofili compensation following her exclusion from the 100m race at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Ofili, a promising sprinter and medal contender, will receive 8 million Naira (approximately $5,000) to address the oversight that led to her omission from the event.
The investigation by the committee did not directly assign blame to any single individual for the unfortunate incident. However, the committee highlighted failures in the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) that contributed to Ofili’s exclusion. Two senior officials within the AFN were identified for disciplinary action due to their roles in the matter.
Mrs. Rita Mosindi, Secretary General of the AFN, was cited for “negligence of duty.” Her responsibilities in ensuring proper athlete registration were found to have fallen short, ultimately affecting Ofili’s opportunity to compete. Samuel Onikeku, Technical Director of the AFN, was also reprimanded for "poor judgment" in handling information related to the omission. According to the committee, Onikeku failed to act promptly after receiving preliminary indications that Ofili had not been properly registered for the event, which might have prevented the oversight.
While Ofili’s compensation has been determined, the next step will be implementing the recommended disciplinary actions and ensuring the payment reaches her promptly. The committee’s decision underscores the importance of accountability and efficiency within sports administration, aiming to prevent similar issues from affecting Nigerian athletes on the global stage.
This decision is a significant step in addressing grievances in Nigeria’s sports sector, where administrative challenges have sometimes hindered athletes’ participation and performance at international events.
