Two African Union Soldiers Killed in al-Shabab Attack on Mogadishu Airport Base
In a tragic incident on Sunday, two soldiers from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) lost their lives, and another was injured following a mortar attack launched by the extremist group al-Shabab.
The attack targeted the Halane Base Camp, a heavily fortified facility located within the perimeters of Mogadishu’s international airport, which houses military personnel, diplomatic missions, and aid organizations.
According to initial reports, the attack involved a 107mm rocket, and at least four mortar rounds were fired at the base. While the full extent of the damage remains under assessment, the loss of life has intensified concerns over the security challenges in Somalia as the African Union (AU) and local forces work to transition security responsibilities to Somali control.
The head of ATMIS and Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mohamed El-Amine Souef, condemned the attack in a formal statement, denouncing the violence directed at peacekeepers and vowing continued efforts to stabilize the region. “This unprovoked attack on our brave soldiers is an attempt to destabilize the hard-won peace we’ve achieved,” Souef said. “We stand resolute in our mission and commitment to the Somali people’s pursuit of peace.”
The attack underscores the persistent threat posed by al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked extremist group that has long sought to overthrow the Somali government and establish a strict form of Islamic rule. Despite ongoing military operations aimed at dismantling its networks, the group has continued to launch deadly attacks on civilian and military targets in Somalia and the surrounding region.
As the African Union gradually transitions its mission in Somalia, the latest incident highlights the challenging security landscape and the risks faced by international forces committed to supporting stability in the country. The AU and Somali government are expected to reinforce security measures around Mogadishu’s airport complex, which remains a vital hub for humanitarian aid and diplomatic operations.
Further investigations are underway to assess the circumstances of the attack, as well as to implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
