Displaced Palestinians Struggle for Survival Amid Harsh Winter Conditions in Gaza
Dozens of displaced Palestinians gathered on Friday at a charitable kitchen in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis city, forming long queues in a desperate bid to secure a meal for the day. This scene has become a grim reality for many in the region as they face increasingly dire living conditions.
As winter sets in, plunging temperatures and torrential rains
have exacerbated the already fragile situation in Gaza. Seasonal flooding threatens the makeshift settlements housing displaced Palestinians, raising alarm among humanitarian organizations. Aid agencies have expressed deep concern over the potential for loss of life, severe illnesses, and long-term disabilities among those enduring these harsh conditions.

“It is very cold. It has been raining overnight,” said Louise Wateridge, senior emergency officer for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), speaking to journalists in Geneva on Friday. “We are anticipating very heavy rain here today, and this is while 1.9 million people are displaced,” she added, highlighting the immense challenges facing the population. Wateridge spoke from the Nuseirat refugee camp, located in central Gaza, one of the many settlements at risk of further deterioration.
Nuseirat is one of Gaza's eight historical refugee camps established in 1948, initially intended as temporary shelters for Palestinians displaced during that year’s conflict. Last week, the camp came under heavy Israeli fire, resulting in the deaths of more than 30 Palestinians and injuring dozens more. The attack compounded the already unbearable conditions for the camp’s residents, many of whom have been displaced multiple times due to the ongoing conflict.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to escalate as resources dwindle and infrastructure crumbles under the pressure of years of blockade and conflict. Aid agencies, including UNRWA, are working tirelessly to provide food, shelter, and medical assistance, but the need far exceeds the available resources. With winter intensifying, the plight of displaced Palestinians in Gaza serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for a lasting resolution to the conflict.
