EFCC Conducts Largest Single Raid in History, Investigates 800 Suspects for Internet Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria’s foremost anti-corruption agency, has launched an extensive investigation into nearly 800 individuals apprehended during a sweeping operation targeting internet fraud in Lagos last week.
The EFCC described the raid as its largest single operation to date, underscoring the scale of cybercrime activities in the country.

Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC’s spokesperson, revealed on Tuesday that the historic raid was the result of meticulous planning, months of intelligence gathering, and sustained surveillance efforts by the agency. “This operation highlights our commitment to combating the menace of internet fraud, which has tarnished Nigeria's image globally,” Uwujaren stated.

The EFCC has been at the forefront of addressing financial crimes, particularly the surge in internet-related fraud schemes often referred to as "Yahoo-Yahoo" scams. These schemes typically involve elaborate plans to deceive individuals or organizations, resulting in significant financial losses.

According to Uwujaren, the suspects were apprehended from multiple locations across Lagos, with evidence including laptops, mobile phones, luxury vehicles, and other tools allegedly used to perpetrate fraudulent activities seized during the operation. He also emphasized that the agency is committed to ensuring thorough investigations and the prosecution of those found guilty, as part of its broader efforts to deter cybercrime.

The crackdown has drawn public attention, with many lauding the EFCC's efforts while calling for sustained vigilance against cybercrime networks. The agency has pledged to remain steadfast in its mission to protect Nigeria’s financial ecosystem and restore confidence in its digital and economic sectors.

As investigations continue, the EFCC urged the public to remain supportive of its work, stressing the importance of collective action in addressing the challenges posed by internet fraud. This unprecedented raid represents a significant milestone in the agency's ongoing campaign to rid the nation of financial crimes.
