Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Passes Away at 92

Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s esteemed former Prime Minister and one of the country’s most respected economists, passed away today at the age of 92. The news of his demise was confirmed in a statement released by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.

Dr. Singh, who served as India’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was widely regarded for his pivotal role in shaping India’s economic policies and steering the nation through significant global and domestic challenges. A member of the Indian National Congress, he helmed the United Progressive Alliance government for two consecutive terms, leaving an indelible mark on the country’s governance and economic landscape.

Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, a village now in Pakistan, Dr. Singh’s early life was marked by academic excellence. He earned his doctorate in economics from Oxford University, following which he held prominent positions in academia and international financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund.

Dr. Singh first rose to national prominence in 1991 when, as Finance Minister in the government of Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, he initiated groundbreaking economic reforms. These measures not only liberalized India’s economy but also set the foundation for its rapid growth in subsequent decades. His tenure as Prime Minister further cemented his reputation as a visionary leader, balancing economic priorities with social welfare initiatives.

Leaders from across the political spectrum have expressed profound grief at his passing, lauding his humility, intellect, and unwavering commitment to public service. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge described him as "a statesman who dedicated his life to the progress and prosperity of India," while Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged his contributions as "an architect of modern India's economic resurgence."

Dr. Singh is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three daughters. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced shortly.

India mourns the loss of a leader whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
