Syria’s New Authorities Launch Operation Against Pro-Assad Militias

Syria’s transitional authorities initiated a major military operation on Thursday targeting militias loyal to ousted President Bashar al-Assad, state news agency SANA reported. The campaign, centered in the western province of Tartous, reportedly resulted in the deaths of several militia members, marking a significant development in the post-Assad era.

The operation follows escalating tensions between pro-Assad forces and the rebel group that spearheaded the offensive to remove Assad from power. On Wednesday, pro-Assad fighters killed 14 members of the rebel group in a deadly confrontation. Syria’s newly appointed Interior Minister condemned the attack, describing it as an “ambush” and pledging to take decisive action against those threatening the nation’s stability. Ten others were injured in the incident.

In a statement on Telegram, the Interior Minister vowed to restore order and ensure accountability. "Syria’s security is paramount, and we will not tolerate any attempts to undermine it," the minister said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, provided additional details on the attack. According to the organization, the rebel fighters were ambushed while attempting to apprehend a former official from Assad’s regime. The individual in question has been accused of authorizing executions at the infamous Saydnaya prison, a facility long associated with human rights abuses and political repression under Assad’s rule.

The developments highlight the challenges facing Syria’s new leadership as they attempt to consolidate control and navigate a complex post-conflict landscape. The operation in Tartous underscores the ongoing struggle to dismantle remnants of Assad’s influence while addressing the grievances of a population that endured years of war and authoritarian rule.

As Syria embarks on this critical transition, the balance between security operations and reconciliation efforts will be key to achieving long-term stability in the war-torn nation.
