Zimbabwean UFC Fighter Themba Gorimbo Opens Up About Family Betrayal Over Financial Struggles

Zimbabwean UFC fighter Themba Gorimbo has shared a deeply personal and heartbreaking story, shedding light on the challenges he faces not only in the ring but also within his own family. The mixed martial artist revealed that some of his relatives celebrated one of his defeats, fueled by a misconception about his financial status and his inability to meet their monetary demands.

Speaking candidly, Gorimbo recalled the painful moment: “After one of my losses, a cousin messaged me. He sent a video of some of my family celebrating my defeat in the same place we struggled together 15 years ago.” This betrayal came as a harsh reminder of the unrealistic expectations often placed on individuals who achieve international success.

Despite competing on the global stage in the UFC, Gorimbo emphasized that his current financial reality is far from the millionaire lifestyle some assume he leads. “I'm not a millionaire—maybe I will be one day,” he explained. “People think because I'm in the US, I'm a millionaire. Someone will message me saying, ‘Send me $5,000.’ Where would I get that kind of money?”

The fighter, known for his resilience both in and outside the octagon, highlighted his commitment to uplifting his community despite these challenges. “All I try to do is get better—not just for myself, but for everyone. I might not be able to help you directly, but I can build a well for the community,” he said, pointing to his ongoing efforts to provide sustainable aid to his homeland.

Gorimbo’s story is a poignant reminder of the pressures and misconceptions faced by athletes who rise from humble beginnings. His dedication to self-improvement and giving back to his community serves as a testament to his character, even in the face of personal betrayal. As he continues his journey in the UFC, Gorimbo remains focused on turning his struggles into a source of inspiration for others.
