Knife Attack in Eastern France Leaves One Dead, Several Police Officers Injured

A violent knife attack during a demonstration in the eastern French city of Mulhouse on Saturday resulted in the death of one individual and serious injuries to two police officers, according to local authorities.

Nicolas Heitz, the local prosecutor, confirmed that three additional officers sustained minor injuries in the attack, which was carried out by a 37-year-old suspect currently listed on France’s terror prevention watchlist. The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is greatest”) during the assault, according to a statement from the National Antiterrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT).

The attacker is known to be on the Fichier des Signalements pour la Prévention de la Radicalisation à caractère Terroriste (FSPRT), a government database established in 2015 to track individuals suspected of radicalization. This system was introduced following the deadly attacks on the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket in Paris. The database consolidates intelligence from various security agencies to monitor individuals at risk of engaging in extremist activities.

The incident unfolded in the afternoon as police officers were responding to a demonstration. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the attack was directly linked to the protest or if the suspect had specific motives. The severity of the injuries sustained by the two seriously wounded officers has not been disclosed.

The National Antiterrorism Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation, suggesting that authorities are considering potential terrorism-related charges. French security forces remain on high alert following a series of violent attacks in recent years, many of which have been linked to radicalized individuals.

French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin is expected to provide further updates on the case as the investigation progresses. Security measures in Mulhouse and surrounding areas have been heightened in response to the attack.
