Mysterious Illness Claims Over 50 Lives in Northwestern Congo
Bikoro, Democratic Republic of Congo – February 26, 2025
A rapidly spreading and unidentified illness has claimed the lives of more than 50 people in northwestern Democratic Republic of Congo, raising serious concerns among medical experts and health authorities.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and local doctors on the ground have confirmed the outbreak, which began on January 21.
According to Serge Ngalebato, the medical director of Bikoro Hospital—one of the key regional monitoring centers—the disease has demonstrated an alarmingly fast progression. “The interval between the onset of symptoms and death has been 48 hours in the majority of cases, and that’s what’s really worrying,” Ngalebato told The Associated Press.
As of Monday, health authorities have recorded 419 cases, including 53 fatalities. The illness remains unidentified, and medical teams are working urgently to determine its cause and contain its spread. The rapid onset of symptoms and high fatality rate have heightened fears of a potential epidemic, prompting both national and international health agencies to mobilize resources.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has experienced multiple outbreaks of infectious diseases in recent years, including Ebola, cholera, and measles. However, initial reports indicate that the symptoms of this new illness do not align with known outbreaks, further complicating the response efforts. WHO officials are closely monitoring the situation and have deployed specialists to assist with case identification, laboratory testing, and patient care.
Authorities are urging local communities to remain vigilant and adhere to precautionary measures as health teams investigate the outbreak. Meanwhile, researchers and public health officials continue to work against the clock to identify the pathogen and implement effective containment strategies.
More updates are expected as investigations progress.
