NDLEA Apprehends Thai Woman with 46kg of Cannabis at Lagos Airport
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle a significant quantity of illegal drugs into the country, leading to the arrest of a Thai national at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.
The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Ms. Pattaphi Wimonnat, was apprehended while attempting to bring in 43 parcels of Canadian Loud, a potent synthetic strain of cannabis, weighing approximately 46.60 kilograms. The discovery was made by vigilant NDLEA operatives during a routine check of passengers' luggage.
According to official reports, Ms. Wimonnat confessed to being recruited by an international drug trafficking syndicate, which had promised her a payment of $3,000 upon the successful delivery of the illicit consignment in Nigeria. The arrest underscores the agency’s ongoing efforts to dismantle global drug trafficking networks operating within and beyond the country’s borders.
NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the development, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to curbing the influx of narcotics into Nigeria. “This operation is part of our continuous fight against drug trafficking. We remain vigilant and resolute in ensuring that Nigeria does not become a transit hub for illicit substances,” he stated.
The latest interception highlights the increasing use of international couriers for drug smuggling, as traffickers seek new ways to evade detection. The NDLEA has reiterated its warning to individuals and syndicates involved in such illegal activities, assuring that stringent measures are in place to track, intercept, and prosecute offenders.
The arrested suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue, with authorities working to uncover further links to the criminal network behind the operation. The agency has urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement in the fight against drug-related crimes.
This arrest adds to a growing list of successful operations conducted by the NDLEA in recent months, reinforcing its unwavering stance against narcotics trafficking in Nigeria.
