Veteran Nollywood Actor Jide Kosoko Speaks on Sex-for-Roles Controversy in Nigerian Film Industry

Renowned Nollywood actor and industry veteran, Prince Jide Kosoko, has addressed the ongoing debate surrounding the issue of sex-for-roles in the Nigerian film industry. The actor, known for his decades-long contributions to Nollywood, asserted that while the practice exists, it is not a one-sided problem.

According to him, some actresses enter the industry with the intention of using their bodies to secure roles, rather than relying on their talent and hard work.

Kosoko made these remarks in a recent interview, where he spoke candidly about the challenges facing Nollywood, including the ethical concerns that have long plagued the industry. He emphasized that while many young actresses allege that directors and producers demand sexual favors in exchange for roles, there are also cases where the actresses themselves initiate such relationships in a bid to fast-track their rise to fame.

"Sex-for-roles is an unfortunate reality in Nollywood, just as it exists in many other industries," Kosoko said. "However, we must acknowledge that it is not always the filmmakers who exploit actresses. Some actresses come into the industry fully aware of what they are willing to do to get ahead. They sometimes take advantage of filmmakers as much as they claim to be victims."

The veteran actor, who has mentored numerous young talents over the years, insisted that professional integrity and dedication to craft remain the key factors in building a successful career in Nollywood. He urged aspiring actors and actresses to focus on their skills and work ethic rather than seeking shortcuts.

Kosoko also highlighted that the leadership of Nollywood guilds and associations, such as the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) and the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), have been making efforts to address unethical practices in the industry. He noted that while there are some bad actors within the system, there are also many reputable professionals who uphold high standards and do not engage in such misconduct.

The issue of sex-for-roles has been a long-standing controversy in Nollywood, with several actresses speaking out about their experiences. Some have accused producers and directors of exploiting their positions, while others have admitted to facing pressure to compromise their values for career advancement. The debate continues to stir discussions about the need for stronger regulatory frameworks and accountability within the industry.

As Nollywood continues to grow into a globally recognized film industry, industry stakeholders are increasingly advocating for ethical practices, fair auditions, and merit-based opportunities for actors and actresses. Kosoko’s comments serve as a reminder that while challenges persist, professionalism and talent remain the true foundation of a sustainable career in the film industry.
