Senior Hamas Military Commander Hakham Muhammad Issa Al-Issa Killed in Israeli Airstrike
Israeli air forces have killed Hakham Muhammad Issa Al-Issa, a top-ranking Hamas military commander and one of the masterminds behind the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, according to a statement released by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Saturday.
Al-Issa was reportedly killed in a precision airstrike targeting a building in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City, a densely populated area that has witnessed intense combat since the onset of the war. His death marks a significant development in Israel’s ongoing campaign to dismantle Hamas’ military leadership and infrastructure.
The IDF confirmed that Al-Issa was a senior figure in the al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ military wing, and one of its last surviving founding members. According to the IDF, he played a pivotal role in the planning and execution of the October 7, 2023, cross-border assault that led to the deaths of more than 1,200 people in Israel and the abduction of hundreds—a surprise attack that triggered the ongoing war.
"Al-Issa was deeply involved in strengthening Hamas’ military capabilities over the years, including its training programs, weapons development, and combat strategy," the IDF stated in a press release. "He also advanced the group’s aerial and naval capabilities, which have been used repeatedly to attack Israeli territory."
His killing follows a series of targeted strikes by the Israeli military aimed at eliminating top Hamas operatives. The IDF has intensified efforts in recent weeks to cripple the group's leadership, particularly in Gaza City and surrounding areas.
The New York Post, citing IDF sources, reported that Al-Issa was considered a critical operational and strategic asset to Hamas and was central to its long-term military planning.
The IDF has not disclosed specific details about the intelligence that led to Al-Issa’s location, but it emphasized that the strike was part of a broader effort to bring accountability to those responsible for the October 7 massacre and to neutralize future threats to Israeli citizens.
The war between Israel and Hamas has continued for over a year, leaving tens of thousands dead and injured, with Gaza facing a growing humanitarian crisis. International calls for ceasefire and negotiations have so far failed to yield a lasting resolution.
