According to Spanish authorities, the crash involved a single vehicle, which veered off the road at high speed and collided with a barrier before overturning. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the accident was reported but were unable to save the occupants. Both Jota and Silva were pronounced dead at the scene. Jota also earned over 40 caps for the Portuguese national team and was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2024.

His brother, André Silva, though not as widely known on the global stage, had pursued a football career at the youth and semi-professional level in Portugal and was admired by many in local sporting circles.

Liverpool Football Club released an official statement expressing their “devastation and deepest condolences” to the Jota family. "Diogo was not just an outstanding footballer, but a beloved teammate, friend, and father. His spirit, passion, and humility will never be forgotten," the club wrote.
