DHS Revises Dallas ICE Shooting Death Toll: One Dead, Two in Critical Condition
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has revised the casualty figures from Wednesday’s shooting at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas, confirming that one detainee has died while two others remain in critical condition. The department had initially reported that two detainees were killed, but clarified the figures after further review.
According to DHS, the shooting began when gunfire targeted the ICE facility, including a transport van in the facility’s secure sallyport area. Three detainees were struck during the attack, and while one was pronounced dead on the scene, two others were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem described the assault as a “vile and targeted act of violence motivated by hatred for ICE.”
Law enforcement officials have identified the suspected gunman as Joshua Jahn, 29, who they say opened fire from a nearby rooftop before taking his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators later recovered unspent shell casings marked with anti-ICE slogans, suggesting the attack may have been ideologically motivated. FBI Director Kash Patel noted that the agency is treating the incident as an act of targeted violence, though the investigation remains ongoing.
Authorities confirmed that no ICE officers or facility staff were injured in the shooting. The Dallas Police Department reported receiving the first emergency calls around 6:40 a.m. local time, prompting a rapid lockdown of the area. The FBI, DHS, and local police are jointly investigating the shooter’s background, motive, and potential affiliations.
One of the detainees critically injured in the shooting has been confirmed as a Mexican national. The Mexican consulate in Dallas is working with U.S. authorities and has requested access to provide support for the injured.
The attack has already drawn strong political reactions. Texas Senator Ted Cruz condemned the incident, blaming what he described as “anti-law-enforcement rhetoric” in public discourse. Vice President J.D. Vance also criticized the assault, calling it an “obsessive act of violence” against federal personnel. President Donald Trump went further, accusing “Radical Left Democrats” of fostering hostility toward immigration enforcement and vowing to use executive power to dismantle what he labeled domestic extremist networks.
In the wake of the shooting, DHS has ordered an immediate security review across ICE facilities nationwide. Secretary Noem urged the public to recognize the risks of inflammatory rhetoric, warning that it could incite further attacks.
As of Thursday morning, federal officials emphasized that the situation remains under investigation, with updates to be released as new details become available.
