Bandits Demand N150 Million Ransom for Abducted Kwara Monarch
The community of Bayagan in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State has been thrown into distress following the kidnapping of the Ojibara of Bayagan, Alhaji Kamilu Salami, by armed bandits. The traditional ruler was abducted early Saturday morning while working on his farm, according to local sources familiar with the incident.
Eyewitness accounts reported by community members revealed that the attackers stormed the farm in large numbers, firing shots into the air to scare off workers before seizing the monarch. According to residents, the abduction occurred swiftly, leaving people in the area in a state of fear and confusion.
Following the kidnapping, the abductors have now reportedly contacted the community, demanding a ransom of N150 million before the traditional ruler can regain his freedom. According to a family source, the bandits issued their demand during a phone call hours after the abduction, warning the community against involving security agencies.
Community elders, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that the ransom demand has placed enormous pressure on residents, many of whom are farmers struggling with economic hardship. “The entire community is terrified. They are asking for an amount that people here cannot raise,” one source said, as reported by those familiar with ongoing discussions.
The abduction has intensified concerns over rising insecurity in Kwara State and the wider North Central region. According to security analysts, the kidnapping of a sitting traditional ruler signifies a dangerous escalation in the activities of criminal groups operating in rural communities.
Local security operatives are said to be working discreetly to track the kidnappers’ location, though no official statement has been issued by the Kwara State Police Command as of the time of filing this report. However, according to security watchers, efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe return of the monarch without endangering his life.
Residents of Bayagan have appealed to both the Kwara State Government and federal authorities to intervene urgently. Community leaders expressed hope that quick action will lead to the safe rescue of Alhaji Kamilu Salami, whose abduction has left the town tense and deeply worried.
