Jonathan Explains Why He Returned to Nigeria on Ivorian Jet

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has offered a detailed explanation regarding his return to Nigeria aboard an aircraft provided by the government of Côte d’Ivoire, following the political turmoil that broke out in Guinea Bissau earlier in the week.

According to Jonathan, he had travelled to Guinea Bissau in his capacity as Chairman of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) to engage in scheduled peace and strengthening-democracy consultations. However, violent unrest in parts of the country abruptly altered the security landscape and forced a reassessment of movement plans. The former president said the evolving situation made it necessary for regional partners to step in to ensure his safe departure.

Jonathan explained that, according to officials familiar with the situation, Guinea Bissau’s airspace briefly experienced strategic restrictions after the disturbance erupted, complicating normal flight operations. As a result, Côte d’Ivoire offered one of its presidential jets to facilitate his evacuation and guarantee a safe and timely return to Nigeria. Reports from diplomatic sources stated that the arrangement was coordinated through the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which has been monitoring the situation in Guinea Bissau.

In his remarks, Jonathan stressed that there was nothing unusual or controversial about the assistance provided by Côte d’Ivoire. He noted that similar gestures are common within the subregion during emergencies, especially for leaders and officials engaged in mediation or democracy-support missions. He emphasized that the collaboration between West African states in moments of crisis demonstrates the unity and mutual support that ECOWAS has continued to promote. This gesture, he said, was in line with long-standing regional cooperation practices meant to protect dignitaries caught up in unexpected unrest.

Jonathan also clarified that some early online claims suggesting he was fleeing danger or personally targeted by the unrest were inaccurate. According to persons who witnessed the security situation, his visit had been strictly peaceful and official, and the decision to use an Ivorian aircraft was purely a safety and logistical measure adopted after the political tension escalated suddenly.

The former president reaffirmed his commitment to ongoing peace-building efforts across West Africa and stated that the incident would not deter leaders of the West African Elders Forum from continuing their work. He encouraged citizens of Guinea Bissau to remain calm and committed to constitutional order, saying that regional bodies are actively monitoring developments and supporting the restoration of stability.
