Nigeria Intensifies Diplomatic Efforts to Secure Former President Jonathan’s Return After Guinea Bissau Coup

The federal government of Nigeria has intensified diplomatic engagements aimed at securing the safe return of former President Goodluck Jonathan following the recent coup in Guinea Bissau. Jonathan, who has been in the country on an official assignment as a special envoy, became temporarily stranded after military officers announced that they had taken control of the government.

According to senior officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja began working immediately with regional partners once the situation escalated in Bissau. The officials said the government is “fully committed” to ensuring Jonathan’s well-being and prompt evacuation. One senior diplomat noted that the situation was being handled with “the urgency and discretion demanded by the circumstances,” according to internal briefings shared on Wednesday.

Jonathan had travelled to the West African nation as part of ongoing mediation efforts under the Economic Community of West African States. His presence in Guinea Bissau during the sudden power takeover raised public concern in Nigeria, prompting federal authorities to issue assurances about his safety. According to a source within ECOWAS, the former president remained in a secure location and was in communication with both regional and Nigerian officials throughout the ordeal.

Reports by local media in Bissau indicated that the military leadership temporarily restricted movement in and out of the capital after declaring what they described as full control of national institutions. These restrictions affected all diplomatic and visiting delegations in the country. Nigerian officials confirmed that evacuation logistics were initially hindered by the closure of borders, though alternative arrangements were already being considered, according to statements obtained from government circles.

Meanwhile, eye witness reports from Bissau described heightened tension, with armed soldiers patrolling major intersections and government buildings. However, there were no indications of direct threats to visiting dignitaries.

The Nigerian government reaffirmed that its priority is Jonathan’s swift and safe return. According to high-level security briefings, arrangements for his extraction are now at an advanced stage, coordinated jointly with regional allies and international partners.

Officials added that updates will be communicated to the public as the situation unfolds, with assurances that Nigeria is doing “everything necessary” to bring the former president home.
