Edinburgh Airport Grounds All Flights Following Major Technical Glitch

 

Flight operations at Edinburgh Airport came to an abrupt standstill on Friday morning after a significant technical malfunction affected its air traffic control systems. According to an official statement issued by the airport, the disruption forced a complete suspension of both inbound and outbound flights as engineers worked urgently to restore normal operations.


Airport authorities revealed that the problem originated from Edinburgh Airport’s external air traffic control service provider, whose systems encountered an unexpected technical fault that made it unsafe to manage aircraft movements. According to airport officials, safety protocols required an immediate halt to all take-offs and landings while diagnostic teams launched a full assessment of the failure.

Passengers arriving at the airport early Friday described scenes of confusion as departure boards quickly switched to “delayed” and “cancelled.” Some travellers reported through local media that airport staff informed them the issue was beyond the airport’s direct control, confirming that the shutdown stemmed from an air traffic systems outage rather than an internal airport systems failure.

According to airport management, airlines were instructed to keep passengers updated as the situation unfolded, with several carriers warning of potential knock-on delays even after the issue is resolved. The airport also urged affected travellers to check directly with their airlines before proceeding to the terminal, emphasising that flight schedules would remain fluid until air traffic controllers confirmed a full restoration of services.

Local reporters noted that while technical disruptions of this scale are rare, they can cause widespread ripple effects across the UK aviation network, especially at a major hub like Edinburgh.
