Mother Charged With Murder After Fatal Shooting of Daughter in Dallas County Home

A domestic dispute between a mother and her adult daughter ended in tragedy in Dallas County after an argument inside their home escalated into a fatal shooting, according to law enforcement authorities.

Police say the incident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. at a residence located in the 800 block of Green Cove Lane. Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call from a woman who reported that she had been shot in the side and identified her mother as the person responsible. Officers who were already working in the area responded within minutes of the call.

When officers arrived at the home, they entered and located the 28-year-old victim, identified by investigators as Jones, inside a bedroom with a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel transported her to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. Despite medical efforts, she died approximately an hour later, authorities said.

Investigators identified the suspect as 49-year-old Shanika Battle, the victim’s mother. She was taken into custody at the scene without incident. Police confirmed that Battle was later booked into the Dallas County Jail, where she is being held on a murder charge.

Preliminary information from investigators indicates that the shooting followed an argument that allegedly began over alcohol. According to statements Battle reportedly gave to detectives, she said she became upset because her daughter had taken an alcoholic beverage that belonged to her. She also allegedly claimed that her daughter had been entering rooms in the home that were not hers. What began as a verbal disagreement is believed to have turned physical before the firearm was discharged.

Authorities have not yet released additional details about the weapon involved or whether anyone else was present inside the residence at the time of the shooting. Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the incident, including the sequence of events during the confrontation.

The case has sparked renewed concern among some community members about how quickly domestic disputes can escalate, particularly when firearms are involved. Law enforcement officials often stress the importance of conflict de-escalation and safe firearm storage to help prevent violent outcomes during emotionally charged situations.

Battle remains in custody as the investigation continues. Court records show she is expected to face formal proceedings in the coming days. Officials say further information will be released as the case develops.
