Tragedy in Saki as Man Dies Attempting to Rescue Goat from Deep Well in Oyo State, Nigeria
In a tragic incident in Saki, Oyo State, a 45-year-old man lost his life while trying to rescue a goat from a deep well, authorities confirmed on Tuesday. The Oyo State Fire Service recovered his body after responding to an emergency call late on Monday night, according to an official statement by the agency’s leadership.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:23 p.m. on Monday in the Mokola area of Saki West Local Government Area. Emergency personnel were alerted that someone had fallen into a deep well while attempting to save a goat that had become trapped. Upon arrival, firefighters found the man clinging inside the well but were unable to prevent his death.
Moroof Akinwande, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reforms and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, said the man entered the well of his own volition in a bid to retrieve the animal. Despite the swift response by fire officers, led by PFS II Kolade Taiwo, the victim was already deceased when he was recovered.
Officials described the rescue operation as challenging due to the depth and confined conditions of the well. Firefighters worked through the night to secure the area and bring the man’s body to the surface. The name of the deceased has not been publicly released as family members were reportedly still being informed at the time of the statement.
This tragic event was one of two recent well-related fatalities in the state. In a separate incident on Tuesday morning, a 30-year-old man identified as Shina Adedeji fell into another well in the Aaje Ikose area of Ogbomoso North Local Government Area and was also recovered dead by the fire service. Officials said that well contained hazardous ammonia gas, complicating rescue efforts.
Following the incidents, Akinwande urged residents across Oyo State to always prioritise safety and avoid taking unnecessary risks in emergency situations. He emphasised that life is irreplaceable and that professional emergency services should be contacted rather than attempting dangerous rescue efforts alone.
The Oyo State Fire Service’s prompt response highlights the ongoing demand for improved community awareness on safety protocols and the importance of rapid professional intervention in emergencies.
