Driver Feared Dead After Car Plunges Into Ikpoba Hill River in Edo

 

A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday in Edo State after a vehicle reportedly plunged into the Ikpoba Hill River, raising concerns over the fate of the driver and sparking reactions from residents in the area.


According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred along the busy Ikpoba Hill axis, a known route within Benin City that connects several parts of the state. The vehicle, whose make and registration details could not be immediately confirmed, was said to have veered off the road under unclear circumstances before falling into the river.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that local residents and passersby quickly gathered in an attempt to rescue the driver. According to one eyewitness who spoke at the scene, several individuals made efforts to reach the submerged vehicle and pull the occupant to safety. However, the situation took a disturbing turn as the driver allegedly refused to exit the vehicle despite calls and attempts to assist him.


“It was shocking. People were shouting and trying to help, but he did not respond as expected,” the eyewitness recounted, suggesting confusion and distress among those present.

The reason behind the driver’s alleged refusal to leave the vehicle remains unclear, and authorities have yet to confirm the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. Some residents speculated that the driver may have been disoriented, trapped, or unable to respond due to injuries sustained during the crash.

Emergency responders were reportedly alerted, although details regarding their arrival time and the outcome of the rescue efforts remain sketchy as of the time of filing this report.
