Fenerbahçe Files Complaint Over Osimhen’s Protective Mask Ahead of Key Fixture

Turkish football giants Fenerbahçe S.K. have reportedly lodged a formal complaint concerning the protective face mask worn by Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, raising safety concerns ahead of an anticipated clash.

According to reports from Turkish media outlets, Fenerbahçe officials argue that the striker’s mask—commonly worn following facial injuries—could pose a potential risk to opposing players during physical contests on the pitch. The club is said to have submitted its concerns to match authorities and relevant football governing bodies for review.

Osimhen has been using the protective gear since sustaining a facial injury earlier in his career. The mask has since become a regular part of his on-field appearance, allowing him to continue competing at the highest level while minimizing the risk of further injury.

However, Fenerbahçe’s complaint centers on the argument that the mask’s material and structure may inadvertently cause harm during close-contact situations such as aerial duels or tackles. A club source reportedly noted that player safety remains paramount and any equipment that could introduce additional risk should be carefully assessed by officials.

Football regulations generally permit the use of protective equipment, provided it does not endanger other players. According to guidelines set by FIFA, players are allowed to wear non-dangerous protective gear, including masks, as long as referees deem them safe before kickoff.

As of the time of reporting, match officials have yet to issue a definitive ruling on the matter. It remains unclear whether Osimhen will be required to modify or remove the mask ahead of the fixture, or if it will be approved without restriction.

The situation has sparked debate among fans and analysts, with some defending the necessity of protective gear for injured players, while others echo concerns about potential risks in high-intensity matches.

With tensions already high between the two rival clubs, the controversy adds another layer of intrigue to what is expected to be a fiercely contested encounter.
