Nigeria Urges Citizens to Shut Businesses in South Africa Amid Renewed Xenophobic Violence

 

The Federal Government of Nigeria has advised Nigerian nationals residing in South Africa to temporarily close their businesses and prioritize their safety following a fresh wave of violent anti-foreigner protests in parts of the country.

According to officials, the directive comes in response to escalating tensions and attacks targeting foreign-owned businesses, particularly those operated by African migrants. Reportedly, several shops and properties belonging to non-South African nationals have been vandalized and looted in recent days, raising concerns over the safety of Nigerians living and working in affected areas.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria, the government urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary exposure to volatile environments. The ministry emphasized that safeguarding lives should take precedence over economic activities during this period of unrest.

“According to the ministry, Nigerians are strongly advised to temporarily suspend their business operations and stay indoors where possible until the situation stabilizes,” the statement read. It further noted that the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria is closely monitoring developments and engaging with South African authorities to ensure the protection of Nigerian citizens.

Eyewitness reports cited by local media indicate that protests, initially triggered by grievances over unemployment and crime, have once again turned into xenophobic attacks, with foreign nationals bearing the brunt of the violence. Similar incidents in the past have led to diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and South Africa, prompting calls for stronger measures to protect migrants.

The Nigerian High Commission Pretoria has also established emergency communication channels for distressed citizens, urging them to report any threats or incidents immediately. Officials assured that efforts are ongoing to provide support and, where necessary, facilitate evacuation for those in imminent danger.

South African authorities have condemned the violence and pledged to restore order. Security agencies have reportedly been deployed to affected areas to curb further attacks and protect vulnerable communities. However, concerns remain over the recurring nature of such incidents and their impact on regional relations.

Analysts warn that continued xenophobic violence could strain economic and diplomatic ties between both nations, as Nigeria remains one of South Africa’s key partners on the continent.
