FIFA, Not United States, Is True Host of 2026 World Cup — Iran Football Chief Insists

Tensions surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup have taken a diplomatic turn, as a senior Iranian football official has asserted that the global tournament is under the authority of FIFA, not any individual host nation, including the United States.

The remarks come amid growing concerns within Iran’s football community over participation logistics, particularly in light of strained political relations between Tehran and Washington. According to statements reported by international sports media, the Iranian football chief emphasized that FIFA remains the ultimate organizer and guarantor of the competition, regardless of where matches are physically staged.

“The World Cup belongs to FIFA, not the United States,” the official stated, stressing that all qualified nations must be assured fair and equal access to participate. He further called for clear guarantees that political considerations will not interfere with sporting commitments, particularly in matters such as visa approvals and team mobility.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, marking the first time the tournament will feature three host nations. However, the expanded hosting arrangement has also introduced complex geopolitical considerations, especially for countries with sensitive diplomatic ties to any of the hosts.

According to analysts in global football governance, FIFA statutes require host nations to guarantee non-discriminatory access to all participating teams, officials, and supporters. This principle, observers say, is central to maintaining the integrity of international competitions. As reported by sports policy experts, FIFA typically secures binding agreements from host governments to ensure compliance with these rules.

Iran’s concerns are not entirely unprecedented. Similar issues have arisen in past tournaments where geopolitical tensions intersected with international sporting events. However, the scale and visibility of the World Cup amplify the stakes, making early assurances critical.

In response, FIFA has reiterated in previous communications that it remains committed to ensuring that all qualified teams can participate without undue restrictions. While no formal dispute has been declared, the situation underscores the delicate balance between global sport and international politics.

With qualification rounds concluded and participating nations confirmed, attention now shifts to how FIFA and the host countries will uphold these assurances in practice. For Iran and other qualified teams, the guarantee of neutrality and fairness remains essential to preserving confidence in the world’s most prestigious football tournament.
