Spanish Court Orders €55 Million Tax Refund to Shakira in Major Legal Victory

A Spanish court has ordered the country’s tax authority to refund €55 million (£48 million) to Colombian pop star Shakira after ruling that the funds were improperly collected during a long-running dispute over her tax obligations in Spain.

The ruling marks another major development in the singer’s highly publicized legal battle with Spanish authorities, which has attracted global attention over the past few years. According to court documents, the judges determined that part of the money collected by the Spanish tax agency was not legally justified, leading to the order for the substantial refund.

The case centered on allegations that Shakira failed to pay taxes in Spain during years in which prosecutors argued she was residing in the country. Spanish authorities claimed the singer spent enough time living in Spain to be considered a tax resident and therefore required to pay taxes on her worldwide income. However, Shakira consistently denied wrongdoing, insisting that she primarily lived outside Spain during the period under investigation.

The singer, known internationally for hit songs such as “Hips Don’t Lie” and “Waka Waka,” has faced intense scrutiny since the investigation became public. The dispute sparked widespread debate over how governments handle tax cases involving wealthy celebrities and international public figures.

Legal experts say the court’s latest decision could significantly impact the broader case and may raise questions about the procedures used by Spanish tax authorities in collecting disputed funds. The refund order is also seen as a reputational victory for the award-winning performer, whose legal team has repeatedly argued that the singer complied with tax regulations and was unfairly targeted.

Despite the refund ruling, reports indicate that some legal matters related to the case may still remain unresolved. Spanish prosecutors have continued to investigate aspects of her financial dealings, although the latest court decision represents a major setback for the country’s tax agency.
Shakira has not publicly issued a detailed statement following the court’s ruling, but supporters and entertainment analysts have described the decision as a significant turning point in the years-long legal conflict.

The case has remained one of the most closely watched celebrity tax disputes in Europe, highlighting the growing pressure on governments to monitor the financial activities of high-profile individuals with international residences and business interests.
