Japan City Closes 94 Schools as Hunters Search for Roaming Bear Amid Rising Sightings

A city in Japan has taken the extraordinary step of closing 94 schools temporarily as authorities intensify efforts to locate and capture a roaming bear that has been sighted in residential and public areas. The precautionary measure comes amid a broader increase in bear encounters across several regions of the country, raising safety concerns for residents, particularly schoolchildren.

According to local authorities, the decision to shut down schools was made after multiple confirmed sightings of a bear moving close to populated neighborhoods and transport routes. Officials stated that the closures were necessary to reduce the risk of possible attacks while professional hunters and wildlife response teams continue search operations in the surrounding forests and outskirts of the city.

Eyewitness reports indicate that the bear has been seen on several occasions wandering near farmland and residential zones, prompting panic among residents. In response, local government units coordinated with wildlife control experts and deployed trained hunters to track and safely capture or drive the animal back into the forested areas.

Authorities explained that the increase in bear sightings is not an isolated incident. In recent years, Japan has experienced a noticeable rise in wildlife encounters, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions where expanding human settlement overlaps with natural bear habitats. Experts suggest that factors such as food scarcity in forests, climate variations, and declining natural food sources may be contributing to the animals moving closer to human communities.

Education officials confirmed that the affected schools will remain closed until the situation is fully under control and safety can be guaranteed. Parents have been advised to keep children indoors and avoid unnecessary travel in high-risk areas. Local police and emergency response teams have also increased patrols to monitor movement and ensure public safety.

While no injuries have been reported so far, authorities remain on high alert. The hunting and tracking operation is continuing, with teams using surveillance methods and field monitoring to locate the animal.

Officials have urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, and to immediately report any further sightings. They also emphasized that the goal is not to harm the animal unnecessarily but to ensure it is safely relocated away from populated areas.

The incident highlights growing challenges in balancing wildlife conservation with public safety in regions where human expansion increasingly intersects with natural habitats.
