Pope Leo Urges United States to Seek “Another Way” in Venezuela Crisis
Pope Leo has urged the United States to exercise restraint in its approach to the escalating political and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, cautioning that any form of military intervention could worsen an already fragile situation. The pontiff’s remarks came during a weekend address at the Vatican, where he emphasized the need for diplomacy and non-violent strategies in resolving the ongoing tensions.
According to statements delivered by the Pope during the briefing, the United States must “find another way” to address the crisis rather than pursue military options. He warned that armed intervention would likely deepen regional instability and inflict further suffering on Venezuelan citizens who are already grappling with economic collapse, political divisions, and widespread shortages of essential goods.
Pope Leo noted that the preferred path, in his view, lies in sustained dialogue and targeted economic measures aimed at encouraging democratic reforms. The pontiff explained that international actors should prioritize negotiations involving all key stakeholders, including the Venezuelan government, opposition leaders, and civil society groups. He stated that a peaceful resolution rooted in constructive engagement would serve the long-term interests of both Venezuela and the international community, according to Vatican officials present at the session.
The Pope’s comments come at a time when debate within the United States over how to respond to the Venezuelan government has intensified. Some policymakers in Washington have floated the possibility of military pressure, while others have pushed for stricter sanctions and diplomatic isolation. Pope Leo, however, urged world powers to remain mindful of the humanitarian impact of their decisions, stating that “any action must prioritize the dignity and safety of the Venezuelan people,” as reported by Vatican correspondents covering the address.
He further emphasized that global leaders bear a responsibility to prevent escalation in Latin America, adding that history has shown how external intervention often leads to prolonged conflict. According to the pontiff, the international community must instead focus on fostering cooperation, providing humanitarian aid, and supporting initiatives aimed at economic recovery.
Pope Leo concluded his address by calling for renewed international solidarity with the Venezuelan population, reminding nations that “lasting peace cannot be achieved through force but through understanding, patience, and dialogue.”
