An Italian boxer withdrew from her match at the Paris Olympics just 46 seconds into the bout on Thursday, choosing not to continue after receiving a heavy blow from her Algerian opponent, Imane Khelif. 

Khelif had previously faced disqualification from last year's world championships due to concerns regarding her eligibility in women's sports.

Angela Carini, the Italian boxer, decided to step back after Khelif delivered a strong punch that hit her directly in the face. After a brief pause, Carini turned away from Khelif and walked to her corner. Her coaches promptly indicated that she would not proceed, leading the referee to halt the contest.

Following the announcement of her defeat, Carini declined to shake hands with Khelif and subsequently fell to her knees in the ring, visibly emotional.

“I am heartbroken,” she expressed to reporters afterward. “I entered the ring to honor my father. I have often been called a warrior, but I chose to prioritize my health. I have never experienced a punch like that before.”

She continued, “I stepped into the ring to compete. I didn’t surrender. However, that one punch was too painful, and I decided it was time to stop. I leave with my head held high.”

Three Americans Freed From Russia Reunited With Families

The three Americans who were freed from Russia are reunited with their families after a historic prisoner swap between Russia and the United States Thursday.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were the first to greet the three freed Americans when they landed on U.S. soil Thursday night. 

The historic prisoner swap with Russia included the release of American journalists Evan Gershkovich and Alsu Kurmasheva, and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan.

In total, the U.S. secured the release of 16 individuals, including five wrongfully detained Germans and seven Russian citizens, in return for eight Russians held in the U.S., Germany, Poland, Norway and Slovenia.

It marked the largest prisoner swap between the United States and Russia since the Cold War.

According to VOA, "Sullivan said the deal also marks the first time so many countries and allies worked together to secure the release of wrongfully detained individuals.

Alongside the Americans, the deal secures the release of German nationals and Russian political prisoners, including Dieter Voronin, Kevin Lick, Rico Krieger, Patrick Schoebel, Herman Moyzhes, Ilya Yashin, Liliya Chanysheva, Kseniya Fadeyeva, Vadim Ostanin, Andrey Pivovarov, Oleg Orlov, and Sasha Skochilenko.

“Some of these women and men have been unjustly held for years. All have endured unimaginable suffering and uncertainty. Today, their agony is over,” U.S. President Joe Biden said in a statement. “The deal that secured their freedom was a feat of diplomacy.”

Government Imposed 24-Hour Curfew Following Deadly Bomb Blast

Authorities in Borno state, Nigeria, have reported that a bomb explosion at a well-frequented tea house late Wednesday resulted in the deaths of 19 People and left at least 20 others injured. This incident marks the second significant attack in recent weeks.

According to security and government officials, the explosion took place around 8 PM local time in Kawuri village, situated approximately 50 kilometers from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, where the injured were subsequently transported for medical care.
