Lapwings Defy Elephant in Dramatic Show of Wildlife Courage
A remarkable wildlife encounter at the Balule Nature Reserve has captured the attention of nature enthusiasts, as a pair of small lapwing birds boldly defended their nesting site against a much larger and potentially dangerous intruder—an elephant. The incident, recorded by wildlife observer Brass Brassett, shows the tiny birds standing their ground as the elephant approached their nesting area. Despite the stark contrast in size and strength, the lapwings launched a coordinated and persistent defence, swooping low and emitting loud, sharp calls in an effort to deter the massive animal. According to eyewitness observations, the birds repeatedly dived toward the elephant’s head and back, creating enough disturbance to make the animal pause and reassess its movements. Their behaviour is consistent with known defensive tactics among ground-nesting bird species, which often rely on intimidation and agility to protect their eggs or chicks from predators and other threats.
