80-year-old American woman killed in attack by ‘aggressive’ bull elephant while on safari in Zambia

A bull elephant in Zambia's Kafue National Park unexpectedly charged at a vehicle during a wildlife safari, resulting in the tragic death of an 80-year-old American woman. The incident, which occurred on March 30th, was captured on video and shared on social media. The footage shows the elephant chasing the car and eventually overturning it while the guide shouted for help.

The woman, identified as Gail Mattson by ABS News, was part of a group of six guests and a guide on a game drive organized by Wilderness Destinations Group. Despite the guide's experience, the terrain and vegetation hindered their ability to swiftly move the vehicle to safety.

According to ABC News, the woman was airlifted to a hospital in South Africa but sadly succumbed to her injuries. Four others sustained minor injuries and are receiving medical treatment. Local authorities, along with the US embassy in Lusaka, are working together to repatriate the woman's body.

An investigation into the incident is underway by the local police and Zambia's Department of National Parks. The attack is a tragic reminder of the power and unpredictability nature of African elephants, which are among the largest land mammals in the world.
