South African footballer Luke Fleurs was tragically killed in a car hijacking incident in Johannesburg, as confirmed by his current club Kaizer Chiefs on social media.
The club statement read: "It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg".
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. The SAPS are handling the matter and further details will be communicated in due course. May his dear soul rest in peace."
According to Super Sport, the incident occurred at a gas station in the Florida suburb on Wednesday evening. Fleurs, who was waiting for service, was approached by armed individuals demanding his vehicle.
Subsequently, he was shot by the assailants who then fled the area. Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, a spokesperson for the Gauteng police, stated: "The suspects used a firearm to force him out of his vehicle and then shot him in the upper body."
Fleurs began his professional career at Ubuntu Cape Town and later spent five years at SuperSport United. He transferred to Kaizer Chiefs last year after representing the South Africa national team at the youth level on multiple occasions.
