Meet the Nigerian Female Athlete Who Turned Silver To Gold

In what can only be described as an extraordinary display of talent and determination, Omolara Omotosho-Ogunmakinju delivered a remarkable comeback that will forever be etched in the minds of Nigerians. Born on May 25th in Akure, Ondo State, Omolara is a specialist in the 400 meters and has proudly represented Nigeria on numerous occasions, including the 2016 Summer Olympics. However, she took a hiatus from athletics to focus on starting a family. After several years and the birth of two children, Omolara decided it was time to reignite her passion for athletics.

Notably, Omolara, who is also a freshman at Harding University in the USA, became the first Lady Bison to achieve All-America honors in the indoor 400 meters this season, competing in the NCAA Division II.

Fast forward to the 2023 African Games, which marked Omolara's return to the international stage with Team Nigeria. Alongside her teammates Emmanuel Ojeli, Patience George, and Sikiru Adeyemi, she participated in the 4x400 meters mixed relay race finals. It was during this race that Ogunmakinju astounded the crowd with her electrifying performance as the anchor leg. Her incredible speed and determination propelled Team Nigeria to victory, securing the Gold Medal and setting a new African Record (AR) of 3:13.26.

With only 30 meters remaining and trailing behind Botswana, Omolara accomplished the unimaginable by closing the gap and overtaking her opponent. In a matter of seconds, she transformed what seemed like a potential Silver Medal into a glorious Gold Medal for her team.
